Every time I go to Cafe Regina I am further convinced they have the best breakfast / lunch in the SJ area. I tried the egg salad toast for the first time this week and it was awesome. It’s kind of Japanese style, with kewpie mayo and cucumbers on perfectly toasted sourdough.
The Salt and Pepper Shrimp has debuted on the March menu, and I hope it stays! It’s simply a pile of perfectly fried shrimp, perfectly seasoned and full of umami.
I love everything from Mugi Pan, but the Bacon Epi is my favorite. It’s perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside like a baguette, but also buttery and yet there’s a smack of ham to it (as Buster Bluth would say).
There are few things I like more than frozen cookie dough, and Cookie Plug sells some awesome flavors by the kilo. The OG (their name for chocolate chip) tastes better than homemade and I unabashedly eat it raw from the freezer.
The Chai Mamey smoothie is one of the best things I’ve tasted all month. It’s an blend of Mamey (a local fruit which tastes like pumpkin) homemade Chai Masala, banana, and oat milk - and it’s addicting.
I’m not the biggest fan of empanadas. Don’t get me wrong, I think they’re good, but they usually have a ceiling and aren’t worth ordering over other menu items. Well the empanadas at Cafe Caleta smash right through that ceiling. They’re homemade right in front of you and bring you straight out of PR to Argentina. Get both flavors! And wash them down with some chilled orange wine.
Curat is not only an adorable new coffee shop but also carries great pastries from Via by Yara. The key lime pie was awesome (so was my iced chai latte). I need to go back for lunch soon, the sandwiches look great.
It’s homemade and it’s the best ice cream I’ve had on the island. Pro-tip: get it on top of the bread pudding. You’re welcome.
