Great Purveyors

As of May 2023

Everyone who lives here knows it’s not super easy to obtain great fresh produce or authentic international products. There’s an awesome community on the island that is committed to changing this by investing in growing and sourcing local produce, as well as cooking and importing great international food and wine. This list includes the best places I’ve found to get produce and specialty foods / wines. I don’t cook a lot so I do not have high confidence that this list is exhaustive. Please send me more great purveyors to try out!

Terraur

(Wine. Murray’s Cheese. Smoked fish. All thoughtfully curated and located in a 55 degree temperature controlled warehouse loft. Need I say more?)

Alan’s Fish

(The best fish market I’ve found in SJ. You can even make sushi from their freshly cut tuna and salmon, frozen shrimp tempura and ikura)

CUT

(Best steaks including dry aged, eggs, burgers, marinated chicken)

Mugi Pan

(Authentic homemade Japanese breads and pastries delivered to your door! My favorites are the Bacon Epi, cream pan,and matcha kweenie, but loved everything I ordered. Their croissant is also the best I’ve found on the island. Follow them on Instagram and order in advance.)

Panoteca San Miguel

(Fresh breads and pastries, imported canned fish and wines)

El Vino Crudo

(Natural wines!)

Paulina Escanes Bakery

(Call in advance to pick up from their bakery near Ocean Park)

Vaca Negra

(Locally made cheeses! Take the tour)

El Rancho Don Nando

(Awesome grilled local sausages. It’s really a restaurant but a great speciality item and view)

Asia Market

(Small shop with the best Asian products that I’ve found)

Kasalta

(Selection of imported cheese and some good cured meats)

Econo

(Consistent selection of harder-to-find fruits / veggies all in one place)

Anita’s Gelato

(My favorite Israeli gelato also happens to be the best ice cream I’ve found so far in PR. Pro-tip, bring a combo of flavors home in their styrofoam packaging)
